What does longevity pay?

The amount increases on the first day of the following month. Employers often grant their employees lifespan increases to recognize and reward the length of their terms in office. Wage increases can be granted annually; they are also granted when employees celebrate significant work anniversaries. An increase in longevity differs from a merit increase in that an increase in longevity is based solely on length of service, while a merit increase is designed to recognize superior work performance.

If a state employee receives longevity pay and is transferred after May 29, 1987 to a position that requires the performance of a hazardous service, the employee will continue to receive longevity pay for the years of service performed in the position they previously held. If an employee separates from service before the date of the annual longevity payment, the longevity payment is awarded on a pro rata basis.
